What is the Efficient GP
Welcome to the efficient GP. This newsletter / blog is the home of my thoughts, tips and practices that are here to make your practice more efficient, sustainable and enjoyable.
In the beginning….
As a GP registrar and then a newly minted GP, I worked in what I felt was a well run and well organised practice.
In spite of this I found myself regularly stuck at my desk in the practice until 8pm, and crawling home exhausted.
I came to medicine late having spent 8 years at university training and working as a research scientist before commiting to a further 4 years studying medicine and then 5 years training as a GP.
This is a pretty heavy investment into my career. I was not likely to give up in a hurry!
I still loved the job, spending time with patients learning from and helping them, but the workload was clearly not sustainable.
As an inherently lazy person, stuck with a crippling sense of duty (therefore not able to cut safety corners and live with myself) this was not a sustainable way to live.
1. Why this, why now?
I spent all my time looking for ways in which the work could be streamlined and made more efficient. Over the years I have developed a huge number of approaches and systems to make the work easier, slicker and more enjoyable.
Looking around me at colleagues around the country, I can see the need for more people to use these hacks to improve their own lives, prevent them from burning out.
2. I am looking to bring together a group of like minded people who want to make their lives better
By sharing what I have learned and developed, I hope others will share their ideas with the community and make lives better for all.
3. Some of the things I share will help individuals while other things will need the cooperation of the whole practice
We each have control of what we do and think, however some of us will also have control over aspects of our environment. Some of the biggest changes can be made when you can work with the rest of your practice on functions. I will be giving tips that can be used by both and also approaches the individual can use to influence and bring about change within the practices they work.
